When you think of salt, the common table variety likely comes to mind, often found in shakers on dining tables and used in recipes worldwide. On the other hand, your regular table salt is heavily processed to eliminate minerals and often contains an additives to prevent clumping.
Celtic sea salt, a type of sea salt treasured among many for its flavor and mineral complexity, is harvested in Brittany, France. Using traditional methods, the salt is hand-raked to retain its moisture and high mineral content. It’s not only praised for enhancing the taste of your dishes but also for its health benefits linked to its diverse spectrum of minerals.
So, that’s the short version…yes there is a big difference!
These mineral differences end up making a huge impact on your body. The trace minerals help you to stay hydrated, and give your body important minerals like potassium and magnesium as well as some less known minerals needed for healthy body function. Clients I have worked with report less brain fog, mental alertness, easier time drinking fresh water nd feeling hydrated when they started incorporating unrefined high quality sea salt in their diet.

The grayish hue of Celtic Sea salt speaks of its mineral richness and the clays found in the salt ponds. However, there is much debate if by the time table salt actually reaches our tables if there is enough iodine left (or any iodine at all) or if it has all oxidized away. Due to its heavy processing, table salt is often viewed as the least pure, with fewer trace minerals.
Pink Himalayan Salt is mined from ancient sea beds in the Himalayas, so it’s protected from many modern pollutants. However, it can contain trace amounts of impurities and minerals that give it its characteristic pink hue. These minerals add to the flavor but don’t significantly contribute to your mineral intake. And as explained above how this salt is mined matters as chemicals from the mining process can sneak into the salt. Finding a brand that cares about a clean mining process is important.
Celtic Sea Salt, my preferred choice, is a moist salt that is less processed than dry salts. It’s harvested off the coast of Francy and its beautiful grey hue comes from the clay lining the ponds. Celtic Sea Salt is known for retaining its rich, briny flavor and a higher number of minerals in comparison to table salt, as it undergoes minimal processing. As it’s less refined, it also avoids the additives commonly found in table salt. This salt can bring a touch of the ocean to your dishes, both in flavor and spirit. The company states they carefully use traditional collection methods.
While exploring these salts, it’s essential to consider potential pollutants. While all salts typically contain some level of impurities because of environmental contaminants, salts like pink Himalayan and Celtic Sea Salt are less likely to contain modern contaminants like microplastics that are sometimes found in sea salts as a result of ocean pollution. Choosing less processed salts can often reduce your exposure to such pollutants.
